Transitioning to an Adult Day Program

Making the transition to an adult day program can be tricky for older adults and their family caregivers. It’s normal to be nervous to try something new in an unfamiliar setting.
Often the hardest part is convincing your loved one that they need to enter a program. Have a conversation about why you think it’s time to consider a day program, what’s included, and why you think it would work.
While adult day programs vary, in general they should include:
  • Meals and snacks
  • Daily activities (exercise, games, field trips, etc.)
  • Events (concerts, dances, etc.)

Some programs also include additional features like healthcare and transportation. For example, the Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) provides coordinated healthcare for your loved one, in addition to social activities, meals, and more.
Making the Transition
Take a look at each program’s activities and meal schedule with the older adult and pick a day to visit in person.
If their first impression is good, your loved one will usually want to come back. It typically takes multiple visits for someone to feel comfortable at a day center.
Consider going to the center with your loved one a couple of times. If the older adult is still not interested in joining, get help from their doctor, close friends, or family members who may be able to sway their opinion.
Take your time exploring options to find a program that is the right fit for you and your loved one. If you’d like to learn more about PACE and tour one of our centers to see if it might be the right fit for you or your loved one, take our self-assessment and have an InnovAge senior care expert contact you directly.
